Thu 24th Jun '21 - Day 13

Exmouth

With 4 nights at our Exmouth campsite and a relative day of rest desired, it is a morning of tasks – 2 days’ worth of washing up, 2 loads of clothes washing in the pay-as-you go machines on site.

We take a walk in to town for a spot more football on the way and a trip to the post office for stamps.

After lunch at the van and the kids a little fractious we take a mini tour of the most northerly part of the headland, going up to the lighthouse (built 1912 after a 1907 shipwreck), reading about turtles and their nesting ground at Jurabi Turtle Centre – which is a shaded pergola with information boards on the mating and nesting habits of all the turtles that comes back here each year in November and December – after which the kids play on the beach.

A few minutes back up the road is that 1907 shipwreck of the Mildura, clearly visible at low tide (left there to create diving site and encourage marine life) which had been transporting cattle down to Fremantle before getting too close to the shore in heavy weather and becoming impounded on the reef.

The final attempted stop is down a rickety sandy track to look for octopuses that quickly falls in the too-hard-bucket, so we tootle back to Exmouth for a round of Magnum ice-creams. The kids try to brave the swimming pool in the campsite but it’s too cold even for Sienna. Skype calls back to the UK before another early night.
