10.09 - Day 239 - Salzburg, AUT to Vrbnje, SLO

Tuesday 10th September - Salzburg, Austria to Vrbnje (Lake Bled), Slovenia (Day 239)

More rain, so it’s time to be on our way. With much thanks to the newly married couple and farewells to Noah and Mila we pack up and head south carrying with us apple pies Clua had stayed up making last night at the request of Sienna.

What should be a 3 hour drive into Slovenia ends up taking 6 hours - firstly because we stop for an hour for lunch lakeside in Seeboden (again surrounded by cyclists - electric bikes have really opened up destinations and raised the age limit for cycling holidays; we’ve seen many cyclists even since arriving in France) but secondly due to a huge traffic jam leading into the Karavanke Tunnel, not because it’s a border crossing but because there is currently a traffic light system at either end of the 7 km tunnel.

Eventually we pass into Slovenia and very soon we’re pulling off the motorway by Lake Bled, with our accommodation 10 minutes away in the tiny hamlet of Vrbnje.

Our apartment is downstairs in a large L-shaped multi-generational home, looking down over the valley. Stara Soncna Hisa is usually run by the wife, but having come out of the hospital today for knee surgery, the husband and daughters have to step up.

After dinner, Kate and I have the proper map out, finally trying to plan out the next couple of weeks.
