20.09 - Day 249 - Lumbarda, CRO
Friday 20th September - Lumbarda (Korcula Island), Croatia (Day 249)
It’s an angry sunrise behind the stormy clouds that are dissipating from overnight but a pleasant - mid 20’s degree day forecast. I take a walk around the headlands into the village of Lumbarda with its small marina, cafes, bakery and supermarket.
The penultimate week of the school term finally complete we head down to the beach late morning - checking in on the eight small tortoises the owner has - for a solid 90 minutes of engineering dam work on the beach, Seb content to dig and build, dig and build, Sienna soon searching out local marine life to put in their new home.
I have just found some notes from my reading of travel books in Sydney of which one recommendation was the Walls of Ston.
Turns out it’s only a three minute detour from our proposed Sunday drive to Dubrovnik.
Also it turns out it’s their running festival on Sunday morning.
Suddenly I’m signed up for a 15 km run and Kate, Sienna and Seb for a 4 km run along their stone ramparts.
Not only will we need to catch a 5:10 am ferry on Sunday morning but with no training time, I make a superficial effort by having pesto tuna pasta for lunch with the promise of more tomorrow, plus no beer in the afternoon sun. Seb is keen to win the 4 km event, Sienna is keen to stay in the car.
Back to the now though and it’s the five minute walk back to the beach for more snorkelling, Sienna is still very excited for each school of fish she spots.
At the apartment as we wind down (having never really wound up) the Croatian chapter of Harley-Davidsons roar into our neighbouring winery, Seb wandering amongst the 30 or so bikes picking out his favourite. Another charming holiday day and the promise of more of the same tomorrow.
