08.10 - Day 267 - Bagnoregio, ITA

Tuesday 8th October - Bagnoregio, Italy (Day 267)

Following on from yesterday’s comment on choosing accommodation, I then look to what might be nearby as an activity or attraction. Doesn’t need to be flashy, in fact low key is more in keeping with our needs.

So it is then as the sun is rising I’m stood a 15 minute walk from Palazzo Granaroli at the edge of the village with half a dozen Japanese tourists looking out over Civita di Bagnoregio, a collection of stone houses balanced upon an outcrop of rock in the middle of the valley.

It is extremely picturesque as the background skies colour evolves in the space of 20 minutes.

After detouring back past the local bakery which is bustling, after breakfast we all four walk to the Civita paying to use the bridge which makes the inaccessible accessible. Standing to the side to let a tiny tractor and trailer past (its that or a quad bike to transport everything to and from the ‘island’) we pass under the stone archway to find a few cafes and quaint (but robust) houses.

The bakery snacks are gladly received as we once again wonder just how you build a community here before the bridge existed.

We make it back to our four storey house before the promised rain arrives at lunchtime which keeps us indoors for Lego, TV and route planning.

In the late afternoon it finally abates and the kids are dragged to the local supermarket with the promise of gelato to follow - I suspect Sienna and Seb are the only gelato (strawberry and mango for Seb, chocolate chip for Sienna - always the same) eaters today.

Dinner is Italian carbonara proving a surprising hit when made the ‘proper’ way rather than from a jar. Everyone is happy.
