09.10 - Day 268 - Bagnoregio to Siena, ITA
Wednesday 9th October - Bagnoregio - Siena, Italy (Day 268)
I start with a replica of yesterday’s walk for views out over the Civita and the sun illuminating red clouds behind it. Even dramatic looking than yesterday morning and only one other person there.
It was searching around Orvieto that led me to Palazzo Granardi and it is there we head to first after checking out.
Half an hour up the road, this surprisingly (to us - I can’t fathom who else happens to find Orvieto on a map for early October) busy old town has a cathedral with one of the most glamorous facades and a level of detail that, whilst beautiful, you wonder:
Do you need a 5th column arching over the front door?
How about 6?
From there it’s a stroll down to the old fort walls which teeter on the edge of cliff faces, watching out over the valley. Man’s ingenuity is one thing, but childish fun of trying to catch a falling autumn leaf in the slight breeze brings more joy.
After an unglamorous lunch of sandwiches at the boot of the car outside a small supermarket, we trundled up the motorway 90 minutes to the edge of Siena.
With only a slight bit of fore-thought we have planned to be in Siena on Sienna’s birthday.
Not only that, but she even had her own bed on her last night as a 9 year old (no sharing with Seb snoring in her face), whilst Kate and I blew up some balloons and laid the birthday card envelopes.
