27.10 - Day 286 - Carcassonne, FRA to Bilbao, ESP

Sunday 27th October - Carcassonne, France - Bilbao, Spain (Day 286)

We leave Carcassonne and indeed France for a brief sojourn to Spain. Bilbao has been on my radar for a number of years, primarily images of the Guggenheim Museum. Hopefully it lives up to expectations. 

It’s a hefty drive, as evidenced by the 54 euros paid in tolls as we trundle 530 kms over 5.5 hours. 

On the way we stop for an hour or so in Pau to eat our picnic lunch at a playpark. Sometimes we stumble upon play parks in luscious settings, sometimes in less salubrious spots where you’re keen not to let the parked car out of your sight. This was the latter, but the kids didn’t notice or care, and of course nothing bad actually happens. 

We arrived in Bilbao and the suburbs of Atxuri at our say-what-you-see accommodation of Apartments Atxuri. Although the entrance is underwhelming the inside is smart and recently redone; it’ll suit us just fine. 

A short walk to the edge of the old town to buy some dinner bits to be had back in the apartment.
